If anyone is still hanging around on this page
my copy has arrived now. And I think it's not bad. First half better than second which is a little identikit. Probably a 7/10 from this corner.
I'm hearing a lot of "return to form"-type comments about this album
Maybe it's time to buy one of his records again.
D'You Know What I Mean
had the line "The Fool On The Hill and I Feel Fine" in it. I don't want to hear anyone starting to retrospectively defend it. And of course another song on that record had "Sing a song for me, one from Let It Be". Subtext: we are coked out of our minds and want people to think of The Beatles every time they think of us. Gnnnnnnnnnn........
I agree with this except for a couple of small things
1) Pretty much everything that wasn't on Definitely Maybe was gash. People even said Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger were dirges at the time they came out, then changed their tune when every bugger started singing them
2) You could have knocked a couple more points off the score
Rather like the album
this EP sounds like Mew, understandably. So top stuff then.
You just reminded me of my favourite joke
Q: What's the last thing a drummer says in a band?
A: "Hey guys, why don't we try one of my songs?"
Lovely people
Great band.
"Potentially it's a fucking disaster, it's a fucking cinder box [sic] waiting to go up."
If he's incapable of even keeping his shit together long enough to just get up on stage on two occasions, strum his way through a selection of stuff from two albums, walk off the stage and go home with a large sum of money, he's not even worthy of anyone's pity.
I have once had full backstage rights at Reading
because I help out with a band that played the BBC Introducing Stage. From this I can say this much: the catering is top-notch. Pete will probably get the first decent meal he's had in years, bless 'im.
On topic, this is the first Reading in many years where I hadn't purchased a weekend ticket in the early bird sale and I'm rather glad now. I hate it when people complain about a line-up just on the strength of the headliners but... imagine how many idiots are going to be there. *shudder*
Hmmm
Apologies for double post.
Well
If you liked them before, you'll like this record. Try unforgetting them.

Although
...the brief excerpt of Keith Harris and Orville was a bit of a shock.
It's a bloody stormer
They've done themselves really proud.
This man is my God
and here is another reason why.
And I should add
that you can say that about any country.
There ARE some bad people in America
...but I've lived there and there are many, many good people too. Making sweeping statements like this really isn't going to help anything.
Bollocks
Blatant opportunism. The two are primarily based round the same chord. You could sort of sing Stylo over the top, but that really is about it. If he gets a penny from this, he's taking the piss.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
I did like Come Find Yourself but this does sound dreadful.
Don't forget to add...
"... it wasn't like this in my day, grumble grumble..."
:)
(You're right, mind)
Yep
I'm one of the people who indulged in the pointless act of joining a Facebook group, something I don't do often, but this one did appear to have potential substance behind the concerns like you say.
We do have to be realistic though - the amount of listeners is going to be viewed in the context of how much of the licence fee it consumes. So it may have to adapt to survive, but like someone says above me, it's hardly like they're above heavily playlisting certain songs either so it's not like there isn't room for improvement.
I do hope Adam and Joe return though, although I thought the question marks there were more to do with Joe's burgeoning Hollywood career than 6Music?
Sounds fair enough - it was unlikely to be "warts 'n all"
Still an essential purchase for me.
Yay!
The Futureheads on my favourite Bristol boat. Waaaaaaay too long since I saw them last.
Ha!
I looked back at this and can see two albums that still mean so much to me that I first assumed I must have voted in this, then I see that it was writers only ... to see that the Silver Ginger 5 album is so high up and I had no say in it - Drowned In Sound, I salute you.
Hang on
What does "Wot a ponce... hardly in the realms of Iggy or Keef" mean? That he'd only be "cool" if he'd done it himself?
To be fair, it's this article that has singled the factor out, Damon merely mentioned that someone in his life doing it had a big impact on him. As it would if anyone close to you did. And I'm guessing they haven't because if they had you probably wouldn't have written this...
Whatever you think of Bono
that would have to be an improvement.
Wha'?
Shootenanny! is great...
I saw the headline and came here to have a rant
but you had pre-empted me and saved me from it. Thanks.
The BBC, as a whole, is AMAZING. And yet there are so many people that will find anything to try and curb it and cut it back. I find this galling. We would really, really miss it if it was ever neutered.
Specific to the U2 thing, it's probably not what they should have been doing but they've acknowledged that so leave it. Fact is, whatever any of us think, U2 are still a massive band so a lot of people will have been into some of the things that the BBC did - the rooftop gig and all that. So whilst probably (OK, definitely) not the BBC's remit, there are surely far worse things in the world to worry about than one of the world's biggest bands being all over their airwaves for a short period of time?
It sounds so much like things he's done before
but when the things he's done before are so beautiful, it's hard to quibble.
I think Peter Gabriel is ace
I even met him once, albeit very briefly. But I do think his time would be far better served making original material... none of us are getting any younger and all that. Use the time to make something new.
Hmmm
I wish they'd never gotten the "emo" tag on their heads, just a top pop band I think.
I have an Oasis one from 1995
and there is no bloody way on Earth I am going to wear that. I'll find something else.
The thing I love about this story
is that normally when you see a headline like this, it's in the NME, making vague connections between things that are actually in no way related. So you see a headline like this and expect it to be rubbish, and it isn't.
She should join their live line-up for a tour! That'd be something.
I've downloaded the track
Given who's singing, it basically sounds like Mew. So can't go wrong really. Far better use of Guy Berryman's time than his day job.
PS
Nice piece on attitudes to pop in The Sunday Times today Sean.
Well
I'm old enough to remember that round about the Great Escape era they filmed everything, with the intent of putting a film out around the time. Then it all got a bit much for them and served as an unpleasant reminder. All that stuff would make a pretty interesting historical document now methinks...
Hmmm
I'd prefer a complete live show on DVD. I believe there's an old one you can import, but one of the current tour would be great.
So it sounds like Hope of the States then?
I'll be buying it.
It's only a 'feud' if both sides are playing
...and Radiohead would appear, rightly, not to give a shit.
I thought I'd get in quickly and say that I like this record too
before the flood of "I was into them at the beginning and they're crap now" messages...
Enjoyed them in Bristol last week
...and I like it when a good band gets bigger - unfortunately in Bristol that means "playing the Academy". I hate that venue with every fibre of my being.
